Kohei Nawa : "Matter and Sculpture - From Aporia toward Memento"

Kohei Nawa takes a part in the group exhibition organized by the Sculpture Department of Tokyo University of the Arts.
The exhibition questions the definition of sculpture and materiality in order to expand the unique expressions of 11 artists.
Nawa is exhibiting "Direction," a painting series in sequence composed solely by its own weight of paint.

Setouchi Triennale 2013

From 20th March, the Spring term of Setouchi Triennale will start.
Kohei Nawa and Kojin Haruka will install their new works at「Inujima Art House Projct」in Inujima island. This is being curated by the art director of this project, Yuko Hasegawa. The architect, Kazuyo Sejima has designed the architectural context and both artist's works are exhibited in each space.

'New forms of creatures emerging from physical chaos' as a concept and occupying a whole space including the courtyard of F-Art House, Kohei will be exhibiting the new work. The site is a renovated traditional Japanese style house.

Meanwhile, Haruka will be showing "contact lens" at S-Art House. By using the collage of lens which drives perceptual distortion, the viewer's may gain a new perspective. "reflectwo" which made of artificial flowers will be shown at A-Art House. This work may reminds people emerging shangri-la in Inujima-island.

In Teshima island, you will find「Teshima Yokoo House」which will be open this summer, in the process of construction.

SCAI will exhibit the works by our representative artists at TOLOT heuristic SHINONOME, the newly opened space in Shinonome.
At this space, Christian Boltanski's shadow installation called "Ombres" (1986) will be shown. Daisuke Ohba and Yusuke Komuta will be exhibiting at the special event; TOKYO FRONT LINE PROJECTS : TRICK-DIMENSIONS which will be curated by Daisuke himself.

Art Fair Tokyo / G-tokyo 2013

SCAI THE BATHHOUSE is pleased to announce our participation in the coming 2 major art fairs in Tokyo, Art Fair Tokyo 2013 (Tokyo International Forum) and G-Tokyo (Tokyo Midtown Hall).

In Art Fair Tokyo, SCAI will present Apichatpong Weerasethakul's solo exhibition. "Primitive", is a film installation which drew a great deal of attention from the viewers in YOKOHAMA TRIENNALE 2011 for the first time, and the photo works of "Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives", the Palme d'Or winning piece will be exhibited at the booth. Along with the above, "Eastern Beach", limited-his private photo works will be shown for the first time ever.
In the special event called「Discover Asia」which introducing the East Asian artists at the venue, his new film installation called "FAITH" will be displayed for the first time in Japan.

At G-tokyo 2013, Kohei Nawa will present "Trans", a new development in sculpture. He applied special effects to surface data of motifs which was scanned in 3D, and converts the result into sculptural form. The resulting forms, fluid and three-dimensional, give a real sense of the actual existing motifs, leaving the viewer feeling as if they have witnessed "the other side," i.e., a world that progresses in parallel to this one.

For over a decade DZINE has captivated the international art scene with his psychedelic abstract paintings and ornate customized vehicles. Drawing from art history and pop culture, DZINE's work explores the world of Kustom Kulture, a genre of artistic practice that evolved from the hot rod craze of Southern California in the 1970s. Infusing his trademark visual and audio language, DZINE uses the sculptural and artistic form of lowriding to examine his emotional relationship with culture and beauty. His carefully crafted artworks are playfully situated between the contradictory worlds of conspicuous luxury and urban street life. In his exhibition, Victory, DZINE celebrates the universal desires for victory and recognition, while paying homage to his rich Puerto Rican heritage.
